Astro Tuesday: Anowar Shajib (KICP) and Andrey Kravtsov

12:00–1:00 pm ERC 501

Host: Austin Joyce

Anowar Shajib (KICP) "The case of delayed gratification for the time-delay Hubble constant"

What’s the value of the Hubble constant? Hubble thought it was 500±50 km/s/Mpc, and I think he may be off by at least 8sigma. I will describe how strong lensing can help us independently measure the Hubble constant, with a precision currently better than the 10% from Hubble himself. I will clarify the seemingly different values reported in our recent papers and explain how the JWST and Rubin Observatory’s LSST can help us get to 1% precision.

Andrey Kravtsov  "Exploring challenges to the Lambda Cold Dark Matter (LCDM) model in the dwarf galaxy regime"

I will discuss some of the challenges in the dwarf galaxy regime to LCDM discussed in the literature and present some modelling results and my personal view of how serious these challenges are.
