Particle Theory Seminar: Austin Joyce (UChicago)

1:30–2:30 pm MCP 201

Austin Joyce, UChicago, "Can you stretch a black hole?"

Black holes are deeply mysterious, but at the same time appear extremely simple to an exterior observer. Thinking of black holes as ordinary objects suggests that we should ask similar questions of them that we would ask of everyday things. How do they respond if we perturb them, or immerse them in an external electromagnetic or gravitational field? I will first review the effective field theory formalism in which we can ask these questions, and then describe the calculation of black hole static responses. All of these responses vanish for four-dimensional general relativity black holes, and I will explain how this follows from symmetries of black hole perturbations.
