Eric Baxter (University of Hawaii) “Understanding the impact of feedback on the matter distribution with the Sunyaev Zel’dovich Effect”

Feedback from active galactic nuclei and stellar processes changes the matter distribution on small scales, leading to significant systematic uncertainty in weak lensing constraints on cosmology.  Using the Cosmology and Astrophysics with MachinE Learning Simulations (CAMELS), we have investigated how the observable properties of group-scale halos carry information about the impact of feedback on the matter distribution.  I will show that the Sunyaev Zel’dovich (SZ) signal from such halos can be used to infer the impact of baryonic physics on the matter power spectrum in a way that is robust to significant variation in feedback physics. I will then show the results of applying models trained on CAMELS to recent measurements of SZ signals using the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT).
