Special Tuesday Astro Lunch Session: in memory of Erik Shirokoff

12:00–1:00 pm ERC 501

Dear Astronomy & Astrophysics and KICP colleagues,

It is with deep sadness that we inform you of the death of our colleague, Erik Shirokoff. An Associate Professor of Astronomy & Astrophysics and Senior Member of KICP, Erik was a valued member of our community, and many of us knew him as a colleague or mentor and also as a dear friend. Erik was passionate in pursuing his vision for the future of cosmology and astrophysics, advancing the field using his unique creativity and technical expertise to develop new instruments and detectors. He was also an active member of our community and especially passionate about issues of equity and social justice. Erik died today (Jan 26, 2023) of injuries sustained in an accident at home several days ago. He will be deeply missed, and his passing is a great loss for our community.

We’ve decided to devote the Tuesday Astro Lunch for Jan. 31 to a session where members of our community can come together and share their memories and reflections about Erik with each other. All are welcome and encouraged to come, share, listen and learn about Erik. This will be completely informal---an opportunity to support each other. A more formally planned memorial will follow in the future. The previously scheduled talks for this date will be rescheduled to a later date to be announced.
