Astro Tuesday: Benedikt Schroer and Steve Kent

12:00–1:00 pm ERC 501

Host: Jeff McMahon

Benedikt Schroer "Cosmic Ray Bubbles around Sources"

Cosmic rays (CRs) leave their sources mainly along the local magnetic field; in doing so they excite streaming instabilities. The excitation of these modes leads to enhanced scattering and in turn to a large pressure gradient that causes the formation of bubbles of gas, CRs, and self-generated magnetic fields expanding into the interstellar medium. Our results might provide a physical explanation ofthe suppressed CR diffusion around Galactic sources such as supernova remnants or pulsar wind nebulae.

Steve Kent "In Search of a Missing Airliner"

It has been over 9 years since Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 veered off course and went down someplace in the Southern Indian Ocean. In spite of scanning over 200,000 square km of ocean floor by multiple companies, the wreck of the plane remains undiscovered. However, the company Ocean Infinity intends to launch a new effort somethime within the next year. This time, the company is willing to take input from interested community members [that's people like you and me] about where to focus the search. Needless to say, the community has many suggestions. This talk will examine some of these suggestion and will asses how well they do in a realm that involves both big and sparse data.
