Kevin Hainline (University of Arizona) "Far, Far Away: Exploring the Early Universe with JWST/JADES"
Following the successful launch in December of 2021 of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), the global astronomical community has celebrated the exciting early results from the observatory. In this talk, Kevin Hainline, a member of the science team for the primary camera on board JWST, NIRCam, will discuss how JWST has opened our eyes to galaxies in the first few hundred million years after the Big Bang. Specifically, he’ll share his work with JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES), an 800-hour observing program in two well studied fields. He’ll talk about the discovery of some of the first confirmed galaxies at z > 11, show off ultraviolet and optical spectroscopy from the distant universe, and share the exciting progress made by the JADES team. JADES provides a unique window on the formation and evolution of galaxies never seen with existing telescopes.
